flyin' leap

I came out of Target and headed towards my car. As I looked down the row, I saw the naked back end of the red Ford Escape. "NOT AGAIN!" I muttered to myself. "When am I gonna have time to run get another one? I can't believe there are people low enough to steal stuff off other people's cars!" I continued to grump as I fished out my keys and pushed the unlock button. Nothing. I pushed the button again. No unlocking lights. I looked closer. Then I looked one row over. The Struttin' Wolf was securely stuck to the tailgate of MY car...

I think I need one of those "Jump to Conclusion" mats from Office Space...

pinned

I told you they fight. It wasn't even over the afghan this time. Actually...I'm not even sure what started it. But as you can see...Hannah got her tail handed to her. I've tried and tried to tell her...John's just bigger and stronger. And resistance is futile.

thursday

It's Thursday. Lt. John will be heading home from Georgia this afternoon. The Office is coming on tonight...which I must say I'm pretty excited about. I actually had to turn on the air conditioner in the office this morning. I guess that means its spring.

We had a good lesson at group last night. We talked about how we're not promised tomorrow, how our lives are like a vapor, and how every minute not spent serving God is wasted. I've really had that on my mind all last night and this morning, too. I think I've wasted a lot of minutes. And I think I need to start rectifying that today.

a tale of two houses

So we went away for our Girls' Weekend. We stayed at the beautiful Elmwood...an 1840s-era house that has recently undergone an extensive renovation. It sits back off the road and has an awesome view. My only complaint was that with all those porches and balconies, there wasn't one porch swing. I guess it's just as well...it was entirely too cold to be sitting on a porch swing.

The second old house we visited was the Bartlett Yancey house in Yanceyville, NC. We met my Great-Aunt Anne and her daughter Lee Ann (who's actually my second cousin...but she's always felt more like an aunt...). It has been restored and is now a first rate restaurant. I love the color...it's actually in the historical color palette.

Group picture after lunch:

On to the silliness:

There was a bidet in the bathroom. It made us snicker every time we went in there. Just remember: it's NOT a water fountain.

The man who lives next door has Coco and Smokey...and I'm told that he hitches them up and gives people donkey cart rides. I wouldn't know. I REALLY wanted a donkey cart ride...but it just didn't happen. Maybe next time...

And last but not least...my aunts Lois and Marie and the stuffed WienerMobile. Their cousin Brack (her actual name is Annie Bracken - and I'm not making this up) has a thing for WienerMobiles...and she insisted that Lois bring her a Hot Wheels one a few months ago. Lois saw the stuffed one, and knew that she HAD to have it.

Lois, Marie, and Shirley spent some time singing around the piano Sunday morning. It's kinda funny to get a bunch of altos together and then make one of them sing soprano. Since they were missing my aunt Kay from their quartet, we decided to name the trio "NoKay." I'm expecting their album to be picked up by a recording studio any day now...

So that's about it. I ate way too much, laughed a lot, and found a great pair of jeans when we were shopping (and that's pretty amazing, since we were in Roxboro...). And I can't wait to do it again...

flippant

Spring must be here. I wore flip flops for the first time today. My feet felt stuffy all day yesterday...and I must say that it feels good to be practically barefoot. Remind me how much I like that feeling when it's July and I'm complaining that it's too hot.

down 70

So we went to the reenactment. We had to stop every 30 minutes so someone (cough-Rachael-cough) could use the restroom. We went to the reenactment and saw the monument get dedicated, then I headed back to the hotel to watch State beat Virginia Tech. Just so you all know, I tripped and fell in the mulch on our way to the dance (The dance was pretty lame...so me falling and leaving a skid mark in the landscaping was the highlight of the evening.) New Bern is beautiful...it was the first time I'd ever been. I feel like I need to go back and just wander around the streets and check out all the old houses and churches. One of the best things about traveling is coming home...even if your team loses the ACC championship on the way.

love that kitty

Caleb came to see us Sunday afternoon. It wasn't too long before he wanted to come across the driveway to play with Oozey. This was the first time he'd been brave enough to pick her up. She actually tolerated him and didn't run away. I guess it's true...sometimes love hurts!

together again

We've been trying to find a weekend where my mom and her 3 sisters, and all of their daughters, can get together. After spending some time on the phone yesterday and going back and forth in emails this morning, we think we've found one. ONE weekend in the next 3 months that we can all get together (and that's if I forgo the Ladies' Tea at church). It just seems to get harder and harder to get together...between work, kids (theirs, not mine), church obligations, and health issues. I guess that's what happens when everyone grows up. It was easier when we were all little and they could just throw us in the car and head to Me-ma and Pa-pa's house. The one thing that everyone agreed on is that it doesn't matter where we go, just as long as we're all together. I can't wait to see them...if we can all just get there!

sugar high

I had cake for breakfast this morning. And my Aunt Lois would like everyone to know that 27 years ago, it snowed.

**UPDATE**

Check out what John sent me for my birthday:
