February 28, 1986:Shirley's side of the family comes to visit for Carroll's birthday. That night, sparks from the wood stove catch the chimney on fire. Everyone is awakened and we wait for the firemen to arrive and put out the fire. Other than the chimney having to be rebuilt, the house is fine. Carroll's party the next day is decidedly subdued due to the sleepless night and emotional exhaustion.
February 29, 2008:
While practicing the piano, Shirley notices black smoke in the front yard. She runs out of the house to find the inside of the chimney on fire. Fred and John call the fire department and ask them to just send one truck to make sure everything is OK, and to please not turn on the sirens as to not alarm the neighbors. The following shows up, leaving Hannah appalled at the way her tax dollars are being spent:
And here I thought I was getting handsome firemen for my birthday...
Post Script:
The house is fine. The chimney is fine. We learned that it just needs to be cleaned out EVERY year, as opposed to every 2 -3 years. I guess I just can't have a birthday without the chimney burning down...
